Frequently Asked Subscription Questions

Why should I become a subscriber to Northampton Regional Emergency Medical Services?

Your paid subscription can save you hundreds of dollars! Subscribers will have their insurance copays waived 100% and will receive a 50% discount on any out-of-pocket expenses (e.g.; deductibles) related to medically necessary emergency ambulance service, provided by NREMS, to the closest appropriate medical facility within the Lehigh Valley.

Your subscription helps to assure that Northampton Regional EMS will have the staff, vehicles, and equipment required to provide around-the-clock emergency protection for you and your family.

NREMS does not receive direct support from tax money.

Pennsylvania Medicaid beneficiaries need not purchase a subscription.

Do I need a subscription if I have health insurance?

Yes! Many insurance companies do not pay 100% of total ambulance charges. In fact, most insurance plans require that you pay a co-pay and deductible. Your paid subscription assures that your co-pays will be waived 100% and you will receive a 50% discount on any out of pocket expenses related to emergency ambulance service provided by NREMS.

Also, keep in mind, that non-subscribers are responsible for full payment of any and all applicable ambulance charges, which can exceed $1,000.00 per trip.

I thought NREMS wrote off 100% of my co-pay and deductible amounts?

Due to rising co-pays and high deductible insurance trends, NREMS is faced with either substantially increasing the cost of the annual subscription or attempt to recover some revenue from subscribers who use the ambulance. We believe that this was the best way to proceed as subscribers can still save hundreds of dollars through our subscriber discount program.

How is Northampton Regional EMS reimbursed if I am transported to the hospital?

If you need emergency ambulance service, NREMS will submit a bill to your insurance company. Insurance payments are then applied to your balance. Once all insurance payments are applied, subscribers will have their co-pays waived 100% and receive a 50% discount on any remaining out of pocket expenses for emergency ambulance services. The subscriber discount is applied - no matter how frequently you require medically necessary emergency ambulance service.

What is NOT covered by a subscription?

The following services ARE NOT covered by your subscription:

Alternative modes of non-emergency transportation, including wheelchair van transports. Certain ambulance transports (emergent and non-emergent), which may be denied or deemed outside the limits of your insurance coverage and /or do not meet established medical necessity criteria; Any charges related to long-distance ambulance mileage charges or transport fees, which are based solely on the patient and/or physician preference.

What if I need a non-emergency ambulance or wheelchair van transportation?

We do not provide non-emergency transport services to doctor's office appointments, rehab and nursing facilities, or home. These needs should not be confused with urgent facility-to-facility or home to facility transportation. If you need urgent transport to any Lehigh Valley Hospital ER, you should call 911..

Our focus is and always will be to save lives. In pursuit of that mission, we never want to be in a situation where we cannot respond to life-threatening emergencies while completing routine transports. As such, we may need to refer you to another ambulance service specializing in non-emergency, routine services that may include wheelchair van convenience transports.

What should I do if my insurance company sends me a check for payment of services provided by NREMS?

All recipients of service are required to immediately forward any, and all reimbursement received to Northampton Regional EMS. Failure to do so will result in the immediate termination of any subscription agreement, and you will be held responsible for payment of all outstanding balances.
